“Fun and love.” The two words mum used to describe what she wanted to be captured from the photo shoot. They laughed, ran, swung, cuddled and laughed, and I couldn’t ask for more from a family. It was exciting, touching and exhausting. Shooting with a lifestyle and documentary photography approach maximises the chances of capturing all the warmth and funny stuff that is at the heart of family life. Not to bash traditional photography as I incorporate a tiny bit of that as that’s the safest shot to get, but heavily posed photography doesn’t lend itself well to capturing a spontaneous family. It’s not about manufacturing a look, kids are simply too unpredictable to rely on this. The shoot lasted 90 minutes and William and Lillia, (mum and dads two gorgeous kids) loved running, Jo and Duncan (mum and dad) were also pretty quick, so it broke new ground for me for calories expended on a family shoot.
Natural photos full of smiles.
This was photography guided by them and not the other way around, the images capture the essence of who they are. It was their shoot, not mine. All I needed to do was keep the camera to my face and keep up with them. They laughed at me each time I had to take a breather, fortunately for me, dad went and got some ice cream. Sound like a funny thing to do on a photo shoot? Not really. It’s a slice of their life and a lovely little window into how they are on their downtime. While they waited they had a visit from a pug, mum had lots questions about where dad was and then some very outstretched arms on the arrival of the Mr Whippy. All good photographic opportunities.
Embracing the chaos.
I took so many photos, there was ALWAYS something happening. Below are some of my favourites from their session.
